The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is the most established and popular path on Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its hut accommodations and relatively gradual ascent, this route is an excellent choice for climbers seeking a comfortable and scenic journey. Spanning six days, the Marangu Route showcases diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, culminating in the summit of Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.

Day by Day

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Activities:

  • Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
  • After check-in, meet your guide for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing, gear check, and safety instructions.
  • Spend the evening preparing for the adventure ahead.

Accommodation:

  • Hotel in Moshi or Arusha (e.g., Springlands Hotel or a similar option).

Meals:

  • Dinner (Breakfast and lunch not included).

Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Activities:

  • After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate (1,870 meters) for registration.
  • Begin your trek through the lush rainforest, where you’ll encounter giant ferns, orchids, and possibly blue monkeys or colobus monkeys.
  • Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720 meters) in the late afternoon. Take an optional short walk to the nearby Maundi Crater for panoramic views.

  • Elevation: 1,870 meters to 2,720 meters.
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours.
  • Distance: 8 km.

  • Mandara Hut (simple wooden huts with shared facilities).

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Activities:

  • Depart Mandara Hut after breakfast and ascend through the heathland moorland zone.
  • The vegetation becomes sparser, with giant lobelias and groundsels dotting the landscape.
  • Reach Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) by mid-afternoon, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

  • Elevation: 2,720 meters to 3,720 meters.
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours.
  • Distance: 12 km.

  • Horombo Hut (wooden huts with dormitory-style rooms).

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Activities:

  • Continue your ascent into the alpine desert zone, leaving behind the vegetation of the moorlands.
  • The trail becomes steeper and rockier, offering spectacular views of the peaks.
  • Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700 meters) in the afternoon. Have an early dinner and rest to prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

  • Elevation: 3,720 meters to 4,700 meters.
  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours.
  • Distance: 10 km.

Accommodation:

  • Kibo Hut (stone structure with dormitory-style sleeping areas).

Meals:

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Activities:

  • Begin your summit attempt at midnight, trekking through the darkness with headlamps.
  • The trail is steep and challenging, passing Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters) on the crater rim before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters).
  • Celebrate your achievement with breathtaking sunrise views over the African landscape.
  • Descend back to Horombo Hut for rest and overnight stay.

Hiking Details:

  • Elevation: 4,700 meters to 5,895 meters (ascent), then back to 3,720 meters (descent).
  • Hiking Time: 8-10 hours to the summit, 6-8 hours descent.
  • Distance: 22 km.

  • Horombo Hut.

Meals:

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Activities:

  • Descend through the heathland moorland zone and rainforest back to Marangu Gate.
  • Collect your summit certificate and bid farewell to your team.
  • Transfer to Moshi for a celebratory dinner and a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

  • Elevation: 3,720 meters to 1,870 meters.
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours.
  • Distance: 20 km.

Accommodation:

  • Hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Meals:

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 7: Departure

Activities:

  • After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
  • Alternatively, continue your adventure with a safari or a trip to Zanzibar.
