Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by a Nano Africa Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel. The hotel offers all essential comforts for a relaxing stay, including comfortable rooms, hot showers, a swimming pool, Wi-Fi, and friendly staff.

In the evening, you will attend a pre-climb briefing with our professional mountain team. They will check your climbing gear, explain the itinerary in detail, and ensure you are fully prepared for the adventure ahead.

Important Notes:

  • Private group packages include shared airport transfers.

  • Additional charges apply for separate individual transfers.

  • To avoid extra costs, we recommend coordinating group arrival and departure times.

  • Hotel check-in starts at 2:00 PM.

In the morning, your Nano Africa Safaris mountain crew will meet you at the hotel. You will then drive (approximately 3–4 hours) to the Londorossi Gate, the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing registration and permit formalities, the journey continues by 4×4 vehicles to the high-altitude drop-off point at 3,414 m (11,200 ft).

From here, you will enjoy your first breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau. The trek to Shira 2 Camp is relatively gentle, allowing your body to begin the acclimatization process naturally. Upon arrival, your camp will already be fully set up, and dinner will be prepared by our crew.

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)

Acclimatization Advice:

  • Drink at least 4 liters of water daily, in small and frequent amounts.

  • Consult your doctor about altitude medication before the trip.

  • Inform your guide immediately if you feel any symptoms of altitude sickness.

After breakfast, you will trek from Shira 2 Camp toward the Lava Tower, an important acclimatization point at over 4,600 m (15,091 ft). This section involves several ascents and descents and may feel challenging, but spending time at this altitude is essential for successful acclimatization. Lunch will be served near Lava Tower.

Later, you will descend to Barranco Camp, where you’ll enjoy incredible views of the iconic Barranco Wall, which you will climb the following day.

Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: 12 km (7.4 miles)

You will start the day early with breakfast before climbing the famous Barranco Wall. The climb is not technical and usually takes about one hour. At the top, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Mount Kibo.

The trek continues to Karanga Camp, involving several ascents and descents. After lunch and rest at the camp, you will complete an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp before returning to Karanga Camp.

Main Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

Acclimatization Hike:

  • Elevation gain: from 3,995 m (13,106 ft) to 4,335 m (14,222 ft)

  • Distance: 2.5 km (1.5 miles)

  • Time: 1–2 hours

After breakfast, you will trek to Barafu Summit Camp, the base camp for your final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Upon arrival, your tents and equipment will already be prepared by the Nano Africa Safaris crew.

The rest of the day is reserved for resting, eating, and hydrating, which is crucial for summit success.

Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)

The trek continues to Karanga Camp, involving several ascents and descents. After lunch and rest at the camp, you will complete an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp before returning to Karanga Camp.

Main Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

Acclimatization Hike:

  • Elevation gain: from 3,995 m (13,106 ft) to 4,335 m (14,222 ft)

  • Distance: 2.5 km (1.5 miles)

  • Time: 1–2 hours

Around midnight, you will begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,340 ft), the highest point in Africa. Although the trail is not technical, the high altitude makes this the most challenging part of the climb. Our guides carefully monitor every climber’s condition throughout the ascent.

After reaching the summit and celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Millennium Camp.

Trekking Time: 8–12 hours
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)

Safety Note:
Most accidents occur during descent—move carefully and follow your guide’s instructions at all times.

Millennium Camp lies within a lush rainforest. After breakfast, you will descend to Mweka Gate, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro trek. Here, you will sign out of the park and celebrate your success.

Nano Africa Safaris will present you with your official summit certificates, followed by a transfer back to your hotel.

After breakfast, enjoy time to relax at the hotel before your transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
